The International in Support the Troops "IndyWatch Feed War"

The second commentary in our ongoing symposium on Katharine Millars Support the Troops: Military Obligation, Gender, and the Making of Political Community. Pinar Bilgin is a professor of International Relations at Bilkent University, Ankara. She is the author of The International in Security, Security in the International (Routledge, 2016) and Regional Security in the Middle East: A Critical Perspective, 2nd ed. (Routledge, 2019). www.pinarbilgin.me

Support has emerged as the new service following a moment of disconnect with the troops in the UK and the US, we learn from Kate Millars book, Support the Troops. How about other parts of the world that apparently experienced no such disconnect? Support the Troops makes no claim to explain what happens outside the US and UK cases. But I wonder if, by missing aspects of the international, were missing a part of the condition of possibility of all this? In what follows, I will consider the international that has allowed for support to emerge as the new service in some parts of the world, even as others continue to serve and support in some other parts of the world.

Millar acknowledges that StT discoursesalmost uniformlyfail to engage with the international in that Iraqi, Pakistani, and Afghan civilians killed by the wars are rarely mentioned (175). But then, inter-state wars do not exhaust the international. The author also considers the colonial background. These states the US, UK, and others with pervasive support the troops practices, notably Canada and Australiaare also unified by their status as colonial states, she notes (177). Indeed, following Tarak Barkawis argument in Soldiers of Empire, colonial military relations have shaped post-colonial military relations. Yet again, post-/colonial relations do not exhaust the international.

The international in Support the Troops can also be located in post-World War II relations between Europe and non-Europe. When I write Europe, I refer to Western Europe and North America as the geographies that are put at the centre by those who are carriers of this particular w...

New arrest warrant issued for ex-Pakistani PM Khan "IndyWatch Feed World"

Pakistan's Election Commission has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who faces a contempt charge for allegedly using "intemperate language" against government officials. The electoral authority handed down a non-bailable arrest warrant on Monday, instructing the Islamabad Inspector General to bring Khan into custody over "contemptuous remarks" he is accused of making about the commission, multiple local media outlets reported. The former prime minister is expected to appear before officials on Tuesday. Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), later shared an image of the warrant on social media, showing only the first page of the document. [See below] The contempt charges were launched against the former prime minister and other PTI officials last year, with the commission previously asking them to appear in person to explain their position. However, Khan and his fellow party members challenged the order in the courts, arguing that the...

Glimpses of an endgame in Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed War"

BY M. K. BHADRAKUMAR | INDIAN PUNCHLINE | JULY 25, 2023

The problem with the war in Ukraine is that it has been all smoke and mirrors. The Russian objectives of demilitarisation and de-Nazification of Ukraine wore a surreal look. The western narrative that the war is between Russia and Ukraine, where the central issue is the Westphalian principle of national sovereignty, wore thin progressively leaving a void.

There is a realisation today that the war is actually between Russia and NATO and that Ukraine had ceased to be a sovereign country since 2014 when the CIA and sister western agencies Germany, the UK, France, Sweden, etc. installed a puppet regime in Kiev.

The fog of war is lifting and the battle lines are becoming visible. At an authoritative level, a candid discussion is beginning as regards the endgame.

Certainly, Russian President Vladimir Putins videoconference with the permanent members of the Security Council in Moscow last Friday and his meeting with Belarus President Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in St. Petersburg on Sunday become the defining moment. The two transcripts stand back-to-back and need to be read together. (here and here)

There is no question that the two events were carefully choreographed by the Kremlin officials and intended to convey multiple messages. Russia exudes confidence that it has achieved dominance on the battle front having thrashed the Ukrainian military and Kievs counteroffensive moving into the rear view mirror. But Moscow anticipates that the Biden administration may be having an even bigger war plan in mind.

At the Security council meeting, Putin de-classified the intelligence reports reaching Moscow from various sources indicative of moves to insert into Western Ukraine a Polish expeditionary force. Putin called it a well-organised, equipped regular military unit to be used for operations in Western Ukraine for the subsequent occupation of these territories.

Indeed, there is a long history of Polish revanchism. Putin, himself a keen student of history, talked at some length about it. He sounded stoical that if the Kiev authorities were to acquiesce with this Polish-American plan, as traitors usually do, thats their business. We will not interfere.

But, Putin added, Belarus is part of the Union State, and launching an aggression against Belarus w...

At least six people tragically lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Balochistan on Monday, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to declare an emergency in the rain and flood-hit areas of the province and initiate rescue operations. The monsoon rains have persisted for the past week, with significant rainfall recorded in several districts, including Sahabpur, Lasbela, Bolan, Harnai, Sorab, and Zhob. Among the devastating incidents, at least two individuals were swept away by floodwaters in Naseerabad district, and rescue workers later recovered their bodies in the districts of Harnai, Lasbela, and Sohbat Pur.

Religious people can be so touchy "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Some Hindu groups in India are up in arms about a scene in the new film Oppenheimer, a biopic about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the Manhattan project that developed the first atomic bomb in the top secret laboratory created just for that purpose in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Oppenheimer was a very cerebral person who taught himself Sanskrit and was fond of the classic work the Bhagavad Gita that is considered one of the holy scriptures of Hinduism. He said in a later interview that when he witnessed the first explosion of the bomb at the Trinity test site in the New Mexico desert and saw its explosive power, these words from the book Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds came to his mind. Here is a more complete quote from the interview of the reactions of the observers as they witnessed the mushroom cloud:

We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed; a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him, takes on his multiarmed form and says, Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds. I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.

You can watch this clip from the TV interview.

That quote by Oppenheimer has now become firmly part of his legend, almost always repeated when stories are told about him. So it was inevitable that the new film would have that quote somewhere. The screenwriters and directors have chosen to have him say it during a sex scene. (Note: I have not seen the film.)

The blockbuster tells the story of Robert Oppenheimer, known as the father of the atomic bomb and includes a sex scene in which the tortured physicist, played by Cillian Murphy, reads the Bhagavad Gita to his lover Jean Tatlock, played by Florence Pugh.

The words he reads aloud, which he translates from Sanskrit, are those of the god Krishna I am become death, the destroyer of worlds a quote the real Oppenheimer recalled after the first detonation of the atomic bomb he had invented. Oppenheimer taught himself Sanskrit and during his life, he spoke of drawing from the Hindu text.

This has, of course, triggered outrage from the religious right in India, p...
