Syrians condemn UN aid deliveries in 'coordination' with Assad government

UN aid will be allowed to pass from Turkey only under 'full cooperation' with Syrian authorities

Humanitarian deliveries will be allowed to be sent through a key crossing point from Turkey into northwest Syria, but only under the condition that they must be made in "full cooperation and coordination with the Syrian government".

The decision by Syria, which was sent in a letter to the United Nations Security Council by Syria's ambassador to the UN, Bassam Sabbagh, on Thursday, will allow the Bab al-Hawa border crossing to be used for another six months, after Russia blocked a proposed nine-month extension at the Security Council.

Both the short extension and the condition to fully cooperate with the Syrian government have raised concerns amongst people in Syria and aid organisations.

Sherine Ibrahim, the Turkey country director for Care, an international humanitarian organisation, said the non-renewal of the previously operating cross-border aid mechanism could have serious implications.

"Bilateral agreements put power and control in the hands of a few parties, making such agreements inherently subject to far more influence by competing political interests and often come with little transparency, she said in a statement to Middle East Eye.

Turkeys EU Bid: Back from the Dead? "IndyWatch Feed War"

On July 10th, 2023, Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that his country would support Swedens accession bid to NATO on the condition that EU accession talks are unfrozen. Within 24 hours however, Erdogan apparently signed off on a new deal that would drop Turkeys veto over Sweden and allow them into the alliance in exchange for, among other things, F-16 jets from the United States.

While the likelihood of unfreezing accession talks any time soon is low, Erdogans desire to unfreeze accession negotiations should not fall on deaf ears, even if it may be insincere.

The main reason the EU froze Turkeys accession talks is Erdogans crackdown on civil society and Turkeys independent institutions. These are completely valid reasons for doing so. But since the imposition of the freeze, Turkeys authoritarian political system has not liberalized by much, if at all.

The reason that the EU has been such an effective promoter of democracy in the Balkans and Eastern Europe is its wealth and strong commitment to democratic government. As the EU expanded into these regions, it brought with it a powerful incentive to adopt liberal democratic values in exchange for robust economic integration. In 2004 for example, Turkey abolished the death penalty, ostensibly to pave the way for the opening of EU accession talks the following year. And in countries such as Moldova and Ukraine, pro-European governments have implemented various reforms to prepare themselves for future EU membership.

The rift between the EU and Turkey, however, is wide. As mentioned, the EU has been, rightly, concerned about the political situation in Turkey. Erdogan meanwhile has used the EU as something of a scapegoat, often claiming discrimination against Turks in Europe. Its a sentiment that plays well with the electorate. In 2013, as many as 60% of Turks had an unfavorable view of the EU, with just over 40% in support of Turkey joining the bloc.

If the current political climate persists, Turkey will never be a part of the EU. But that doesnt mean that talks should be frozen indefinitely. There is a real concern that any talks without political reform will show that the EU is soft on core issues such as democracy and human rights. One option is that the EU could insist that Turkey and the EU first complete chapter negotiations relating to the judiciary, justice, and institutions, to the satisfaction of the Commission. Only after satisfactory democratic safeguards are put in place could moving on to the remaining chapters...

Making Sense of the Turkish Elections through a Marxist Lens: an Interview with Cihan Tual "IndyWatch Feed World"

The May 14 and 28 elections in Turkey resulted in the continuation of the Erdoan regime even though almost half of the country opposed it. To make sense of these results, we talked with Cihan Tual, a professor of sociology at the University of Berkeley, about the place of the socialist movement in Turkey, the position of the left-social democracy in the world, the relationship of the socialist movement in Turkey to blue- and white-collar workers, the legacy of the Gezi Resistance, and the place of the Workers Party of Turkey (TP) in all this.

The British government has invited Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to visit London later this year, the Financial Times reported on Friday.

Citing people briefed on the trip, the newspaper said the visit is expected to take place in October or November.

A British government official confirmed the visit and said the exact timing will be up to them, given we need them more than they need us.

It would be the first trip by the Saudi Arabian crown prince to London since he became an international pariah in October 2018 following the murder of Middle East Eye and Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents in Istanbul.

After a four-year enforced hiatus, he made his first trip to Europe since the murder in July 2022, visiting Greece and France.

Earlier that year, he met with then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Riyadh as London sought to lobby the Gulf kingdom for higher oil production in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has no illusions about Trkiye's commitments to NATO but would urge Ankara to look realistically about its chances of joining the EU, Moscow has said. The Turkish president had previously linked Sweden's accession to the US-led military bloc with his own nation's long-standing wish to become part of the European community. Russia realizes that Trkiye has commitments to NATO, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Tuesday. "We never put on rose-tinted glasses in that regard. A mass grave of at least 87 people allegedly killed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) was found in Sudan's Darfur region, the UN said on Thursday.

According to what the UN Human Rights Office described as credible information, the victims from the non-Arab ethnic Masalit group were killed by the RSF and allied armed groups between 13 and 21 June outside the city of el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state.

Locals were forced to bury 37 bodies on 20 June in a one-metre-deep mass grave. An additional 50 bodies were buried at the same site the following day.

The bodies of seven women and seven children were among those buried in el-Geneinas Al-Madaress and Al-Jamarek districts.

More than Mountaineering: Using PeakVisor for Geolocation "IndyWatch Feed War"

A short, shaky video and a single photograph show mourners standing on a mountainside as a row of bodies lie shrouded, about to be buried. Both images appear to be taken from close viewpoints and at nearly the same time 17:53 UTC on May 28, 2022. But where exactly were they taken?

Left: The still image of the mountain burial (bodies pixelated by Bellingcat). Right: A composite panorama spliced from video and sharpened using Photopea.

While the first Telegram posts have since been deleted, these images and a video can still be found online as they had been shared by other Tajik Telegram users shortly after the initial posts.

Accompanying text on the Telegram post by Pamir Daily News which contained these images claimed that the burial took place in the Rushon District of Tajikistan, and that the dead had been killed by government troops during a crackdown in the remote Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region in the east of the country.

There are a few further clues. As the mourners are dressed in anoraks and trainers rather than climbing gear, it is likely that the paths to this location were not extremely steep. This suggests a location in the foothills, rather than higher up the mountains.

But thats where geolocating this footage stalled. There is no Google Street View in this remote area. The only footage available on Mapillary points down the main Pamir Highway from the perspective of a car travelling in one direction. Google Earths ground-level view rendered the real-life jagged terrain as too smoothed to show distinctive rock features.

In this type of landscape, PeakVisor is a valuable tool. This app was originally developed to help mountaineers and hikers orientate, navigate and share geographic information on their smartphones. It has come to play a growing role in open source investigations, confirming geolocations in Bellingcats stories as far afield as Armenia,...

Turkey's Erdogan betrays Putin "IndyWatch Feed World"

On the cusp of the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Turkey's President Erdogan dropped a couple of turds in the Russian punch bowl he broke the agreement he made with Russia to imprison AZOV leaders who were taken prisoner at Mariupol in May of 2022, he endorsed immediate membership in NATO for Ukraine and he signed a deal to expand drone production in Ukraine. Erdogan's moves have been greeted with anger in Moscow and strengthened the position of hardliners who have long insisted that Erdogan is not to be trusted. It does make Putin look both foolish and weak for trusting Erdogan to uphold his side of the bargain to keep the AZOV leaders penned up until the war in Ukraine ends. This is not going to galvanize Putin's opponents to force his removal, but it does bring glee and merriment to Western leaders eager to see Putin damaged. What the hell was Erdogan thinking? What to expect from NATO Summit 2023 "IndyWatch Feed World"

The trajectory of the Ukraine war hangs in the balance. All eyes are on the US President Joe Biden's arrival in Vilnius for the NATO summit meeting (June 11-12.) Biden got a big boost already from Turkish President Recep Erdogan's commitment to transmit the Accession Protocol for Sweden to Trkiye's Grand National Assembly for swift ratification. That this commitment was forthcoming ahead of Biden's one-on-one meeting with Erdogan in Vilnius has great optics too, which will inevitably strengthen his hands to forge a NATO consensus on the way forward in the Ukraine war. Biden's statement said, "I stand ready to work with President Erdogan and Turkiye on enhancing defence and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic area." The wording skirts the Ukraine war specifically, but is indicative of Erdogan returning to the NATO fold like a prodigal son having struck a far-reaching deal for his country Erdogan had mentioned the resumption of Turkiye's accession process with the EU as the West's...

France to supply Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles "IndyWatch Feed War"

Scalp on Rafale

John Irish Reuters July 11, 2023

France will join Britain in supplying Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles, which can travel 250 km (155 miles), a move that allows Ukrainian forces to hit Russian troops and supplies deep behind front lines, French officials said on Tuesday.

Emmanuel Macron said he had decided to boost military aid to Ukraine to help its counteroffensive as the French President arrived at a summit of the 31-member NATO alliance in Lithuania.

I have decided to increase deliveries of weapons and equipment to enable the Ukrainians to have the capacity to strike deeply, Macron said, while declining to say how many missiles would be sent.

A French diplomatic source said they were talking about 50 SCALP missiles produced by European manufacturer MBDA.

The missiles would come from existing French military stocks, a French military source told reporters, adding that it would be a significant number.

Paris has previously supplied Mistral shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine and Crotale short-range anti-air missiles, which are used to intercept low-flying missiles and aircraft.

Ukraine has been asking for months for longer-range missiles but the United States, its main supplier, has yet to agree to supply them.

Britain said in May it was supplying the Franco-British missile, produced by MBDA, that it calls the Storm Shadow.

The French version, known as SCALP, has a range of about 250 km, three times as far as Ukraines existing missile capacities.

The missiles were being integrated into Ukrainian Russian-made warplanes, the French military source said.

The source dismissed suggestions that the missiles were an escalation, saying their use was proportional and noting that Russia was using cruise missiles launched from thousands of kilometres away.

It rebalances things and enables Ukraine to hit deep into Russian lines and can penetrate tougher targets, he said.

Macron said the delivery would adhere to Frances policy of assisting Ukraine to defend its territory, implying that Paris had received assurances from Kyiv that the missiles would not be fired into Russia.

There are guarantees for (restricting) the use of these missiles to internationally-recognised borders of Ukraine, the military source said.

Five Reasons Why India Could Mediate A Russian-Ukrainian Ceasefire "IndyWatch Feed War"

BY ANDREW KORYBKO | JULY 11, 2023

Theres a growing consensus that the failure of Kievs NATObacked counteroffensive and Moscows edge over NATO in their race of logistics/war of attrition will result in the resumption of Russian-Ukrainian talks in some form by the end of the year as was explained here. This will at the very least be aimed at reaching a ceasefire, but Zelensky is prohibited by the Rada from conducting talks with Russia, ergo the need for a mediator. Here are five reasons why India could play this role:

-

1. The US Wants To De-Sinify The Peace Process

China has the diplomatic power to implement its plan for freezing the NATO-Russian proxy war, but only if the US allows Kiev to participate in talks under its aegis, which is unlikely to be approved. Theres no way that Washington would let its systemic rival go down in history as the country that helped end the most geostrategically significant conflict since World War II, with it instead preferring to de-Sinify the peace process by having someone else play this role in order to deprive Beijing of that diplomatic victory.

2. Russia Might Not Trust Turkiye To Mediate Again

Turkish President Erdogans violation of the Azovstal deal that he reached last year with his Russian counterpart might have irreparably damaged trust between them to the point where President Putin no longer feels comfortable with Turkiye mediating between it and Kiev e...
