The end of the unipolar world "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

The end of the unipolar world

The global world order is on the verge of a radical transformation.

The Western powers 30 years ago saw in the collapse of the Soviet Union, which resulted from its internal weaknesses and mistakes, an unprecedented opportunity to dominate the world by way of deterring possible competitors by any means.

Perhaps one of the most important features of the current times is this truth dawning on the countries of the so-called Global South: they understand that the instruments of this deterrence have been demonization, isolation, interference, political sabotage, development of provocations and crises, sanctions, flagrant violations of international law, including overt military invasions.

These words were recently spoken by the President of Eritrea, Isaias Afwerki.

This US strategy, which was designed to confirm and strengthen Washingtons hegemony, has failed and is rejected by the absolute majority of the worlds population. This notion was clearly expressed by the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram on May 30 of this year.

US President Joe Bidens ideas of dividing all countries into democratic and authoritarian camps are increasingly showing their artificiality and incapacity. The most striking recent example has been the decisive victory of Recep Tayyip Erdoan in Turkeys presidential elections this May. All this despite the American media noting the dreadful state of the Turkish economy as well as Februarys earthquakes, which took an estimated 50,000 lives and caused tens of thousands of injuries, which should have led to Erdoans crushing defeat. In this regard the observer of the New York Times Bret Stephens arrives, with surprise, at the conclusion, that there are things people care about more than their paychecks.

More and more developing countries are openly rebelling against the dictates of the West. Take, for example, Tunisia, a small Mediterranean country facing considerable economic difficulties. In October 2022, an agreement in principle was reached with the International Monetary Fund on an almost...

How Colombias first Palestinian minister weaves her heritage into politics

In an interview with MEE, Colombias environment minister, Susana Muhamad, opens up about the Palestinian roots that shape her life and politics

Susana Muhamad, Colombia's minister of environment and sustainable development, at a press conference during a UN biodiversity conference in Montreal, Canada, on 18 December 2022 (AFP)

Since she was a little girl growing up in the Colombian capital of Bogota, Susana Muhamad knew she was not like other children around her. Her surname was a constant reminder of an inherited difference, something weird.

Her full name is Maria Susana Muhamad Gonzalez, but her Arab surname is a rarity - one she couldnt quite wrap her head around as a child.

You have a surname that you dont quite understand where it comes from or what its roots are, and it feels like something is missing. There was always a question, Muhamad tells Middle East Eye.

Since I was five years old, Ive had to spell out my name for people, I thought: This isnt from here, its weird.

Her name was passed onto her from her grandfather, a Palestinian Muslim who arrived in Colombia in 1925, as a wave of mass migration from the crumbling Ottoman Empire reached Latin American shores

The Emergence of a New Non-Alignment "IndyWatch Feed War"

Sahej Rahal (India), Juggernaut, 2019.

A new mood of defiance in the Global South has generated bewilderment in the capitals of the Triad (the United States, Europe, and Japan), where officials are struggling to answer why governments in the Global South have not accepted the Western view of the conflict in Ukraine or universally supported the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in its efforts to weaken Russia. Governments that had long been pliant to the Triads wishes, such as the administrations of Narendra Modi in India and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Trkiye (despite the toxicity of their own regimes), are no longer as reliable.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Indias Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has been vocal in defending his governments refusal to accede to Washingtons pressure. In April 2022, at a joint press conference in Washington, DC with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Jaishankar was asked to explain Indias continued purchase of oil from Russia. His...

Weekend long read "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

1) At the Moshe Dayan Center, Dr. Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak discusses the recent elections in Turkey.

In retrospect, the 2023 elections will be remembered as the most challenging general elections for Erdoans political survival. The deteriorating economy, the de-valuation of the Turkish Lira vis--vis the US Dollar, the high cost of living, and the mishandling of the February 6 earthquake disaster that claimed more than 50 thousand lives  all significantly risked Erdoans chances of winning.

Thus, in order not to waste a single vote, Erdoan had no choice but to work on growing his C alliance. This act of survival paved the way for the C to include controversial radical Islamist parties such as the Turkish Hizbullah terrorist organizations legal wing the Free Cause Party (HDAPAR an acronym also for the Party of God Hizbullah) and the Renewed Welfare Party (YRP) of Fatih Erbakan.

2) At WINEP, Dr Khairy Omar looks at the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhoods internal crises.

In recent years, Egypts Muslim Brotherhood has dealt with numerous crises as a political group, especially in the face of significant pressure from the Egyptian government. Yet the organization has faced increasing internal challenges as well, amplifying the groups struggles as it continues to position itself as an opposition political group. It is worth examining the...

De-Escalation Can Start with Ending All Nuclear Weapons Sharing "IndyWatch Feed War"

Ivy Mike (yield 10.4 mt) an atmospheric nuclear test conducted by the U.S. at Enewetak Atoll on 1 November 1952. It was the worlds first successful hydrogen bomb.

By John LaForge, Antiwar.com, June 15, 2023

Ukraine, the United States, and NATO have condemned what they correctly called Russian President Putins dangerous and irresponsible plan to soon deploy nuclear weapons to neighboring Belarus.

On June 9, Mr. Putin announced that Moscow would deploy its nuclear weapons next month, reporting that work on new facilities for housing the weapons in Belarus would be complete by July 7-8.

Mr. Putin had said on March 25 that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenkos right: He says were your closest allies. Why do the Americans deploy their nuclear weapons to their allies, on their territory, train the crews, and pilots how to use this type of weapon if needed? We agreed that we will do the same.

Indeed, the United States has transferred more than 100 of its 50- and 170-kiloton nuclear gravity bombs known as B61s to bases in Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Turkey, where allied pilots rehearse nuclear weapons attacks using their allied fighter jets. Case in point, NATOs Air Defender 2023, a nine-day German-led, international war game involving 24 countries live-flying all across Germany, just began Monday June 12, in the midst of the hot war in Ukraine.

Point of information: The Associated Press keeps calling the nuclear weapons in question tactical, so it must be recalled that the city-busting Hiroshima bomb was a 15-kiloton device far less destructive than todays B61 tactical H-bombs.

Now Putin and Lukashenko intend to copy U.S. practice and violate the terms of the 1970 Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in the same way that the United States has. Any such transfer constitutes not just a violation of the N...

Personnel changes Erdogans new team "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

Personnel changes Erdogans new team

Elections always suggest new hopes, new changes and new faces of those who will then generate innovations. During the election campaign, Recep Erdogan promised, in case of his victory, to significantly change the composition of the government, and to send the current ministers as members to parliament.

Erdogan, as it is known, always means what he says. This time as well, immediately after taking the oath and inauguration, the Turkish president announced the new composition of the government. The following three universal features of the new cabinet can be identified:

1) The age bracket of ministers is from 39 to 58 years, that is, a very energetic, young and promising period of productive activity for a politician (in other words, Erdogan may be preparing his replacement from among them).

2) Most of them received higher education in the USA and European countries (in other words, it is a bet on quality education and a government of technocrats composed of Erdogans associates, but at the same time a certain orientation to the West).

3) All cabinet ministers have considerable experience of state activity in different areas and in different positions.

It cannot be said that Erdogan has replaced 100% of former heads of departments with new ministers. Thus, Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca and Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy retained their posts in the new government. Apparently, Koca distinguished himself in the conditions of the pandemic and showed a prompt reaction in the situation of the recent devastating earthquake. In turn, the head of the tourism department, obviously, is coping well with the tourist service and the increase in the flow of foreign tourists, which in the conditions of the financial crisis means an important source of revenue for the budget.

However, the purpose of this article does not include evaluating the results of the previous government of Turkey, since President Erdogan and the Turkish society are there to do that. Naturally, in a crisis, the masses demand a change in th...

The UN has warned that due to an unprecedented funding crisis, it will be cutting food aid to at least 2.5 million Syrians.

More than 5.5 million Syrians rely on the UN World Food Programme (WFP) for their basic food needs.

The WFP is in the process of drawing up plans to prioritise the remaining three million Syrians who are unable to make it from one week to the next without food assistance.

The UN body warned that if it continued to provide aid to all the 5.5 million people in need it would run out of food completely by October.

Instead of scaling up or even keeping pace with increasing needs, were facing the bleak scenario of taking assistance away from people, right when they need it the most, said WFP Representative and Country Director in Syria, Kenn Crossley, in a statement.

Finding hard cash for Syrians amid the war in Ukraine, a growing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, and a long-simmering one in Yemen might be difficult.

The amount of money needed to feed Syrians alone is staggering, with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterre...

"He tells me, Lets talk," Lukashenko said in an interview with Rossiya-1 television.

The Belarusian president said the countries had held talks in Lvov, which were attended by Kirill Budanov, the head of the Chief Intelligence Department at the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. Lukashenko didnt say when the talks took place.

The president said the talks went well until the US stepped in.

"The Americans became aware. Some frictions emerged," he said.

US involvement prevents Ukraine peace Hungary "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | June 14, 2023

Near-term prospects for ending the Ukraine conflict are not looking good, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told the Turkish Anadolu agency on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, all developments are showing a totally different direction. The weapons deliveries, the very open reference to nuclear capacities, the offensives against each other from the two sides, the Ukrainian soldiers being trained in European countries, the very deep involvement of the Americans. So these are not heading toward peace for sure, he said, during an interview in New York.

Szijjarto also pointed out that Ukraine is only able to fight Russia because of weapons supplied by the US, and that a long-term peace deal would depend on an agreement between Moscow and Washington.

Hungary has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and urged a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Budapest has also refused to allow the transit of Ukraine-bound NATO weapons across its territory, or training of Ukrainian soldiers on its soil.

Late on Tuesday, US Senator Jim Risch of Idaho blocked the sale of HIMARS rocket artillery to Hungary, citing Budapests delay in approving Swedens membership in the US-led military bloc. As the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Risch is able to hold up the weapons deal, worth an estimated $735 million and involving 24 HIMARS launchers and the ammunition for them.

Hungary is not opposed to Stockholms membership in principle, Szijjarto told Anadolu, but the parliament in Budapest is taking into consideration the insults and interference into the countrys internal affairs coming from Stockholm.

Multiple Swedish officials have accused Hungary of backsliding on democracy and the rule of law and accused PM Viktor Orban of acting like a dictator, as part of an EU campaign to compel obedience from Budapest.

We never interfere in the domestic issues of other countries, Szijjarto said. Such accusations give a reason to put this issue on hold for a while.

NATO is hoping to finalize Swedens membership ahead of next months summit in Vilnius, but even if Hungary succumbs to US pressure, that would still leave Trkiye as a holdout. Ankara has repeatedly said that Stockholm needs to do more to implement the agreement reached last year, involving the extradition of Kurdish activists accused of terrorism.

Washington Trying to Blackmail Armenians in Karabakh Into US-Brokered Talks: Heres Why "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Ilya Tsukanov Sputnik 14.06.2023

The dispute between Armenians and Azerbaijanis over the landlocked mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh has been a source of severe tensions between the Caucasus nations, with several conflicts fought over the territory over the past 35 years. Moscow has worked tirelessly to mediate the crisis.

Washington is reportedly making a concerted, behind-the-scenes push to interfere directly in negotiations between Azerbaijan and the ethnic Armenian-led unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, including by blackmailing the Armenian side with the threat of a fresh round of violence in the region.

Informed sources cited by Russian media indicated that US officials which until recently had limited their mediation efforts to talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia proper, are now trying to force their way into the sensitive negotiations between Baku and Stepanakert (Nagorno-Karabakhs self-proclaimed capital).

In the form of an ultimatum, Washington is forcing Nagorno-Karabakh representatives to agree to a meeting with the Azeri side in the near future in a third country under the supervision of American curators. Moreover, the Karabakh leadership has been told that if they refuse, they will be threatened with something close to an Azerbaijani counter-terrorist operation in the region, the sources indicated.

The ultimatum has reportedly been received negatively in Stepanakert overall, but got support from Sergey Ghazaryan, the self-proclaimed republics foreign minister.

The past few weeks have seen a flurry of US and EU diplomatic activity in the Southern Caucasus, with Armenia and Azerbaijans foreign ministers meeting in Washington with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in early May, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev holding talks in Brussels mediated by European Council chief Charles Michel the same month. In late May, Pashinyan, Aliyev, and Russian President Vladimir Putin held trilateral talks in Moscow. Pashinyan and Aliyev got into an argument much reported on in Western media about transport corridors during the Eurasian Economic Union Summit, with Putin intervening to quell the dispute.

US and EU mediators spoke of significant progress in the Armenian-Azeri talks, but few details were made public. However, on May 22, Pashinyan made the bombshell announcement that Yerevan would be ready to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan if the security of its ethnic Armenian population was guaranteed. This move was sharply criticized by some observers as a de-facto concession by Yerevan to leave the Karabakh issue pr...

The imprisoned former co-leader of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democracy Party (HDP) has said it was the "wrong choice" to back Kemal Kilicdaroglu in Turkey's presidential elections.

Figen Yuksekdag made the comments in a letter to Middle East Eye from her cell in Kandira Prison.

She has spent more than six years in jail on terrorism and incitement charges after being arrested along with her HDP co-leader and former presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtas.

In last month's presidential elections, her party threw its weight behind Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), instead of fielding their own candidate.

Although Kilicdaroglu kept the HDP at a distance for fear of offending his Turkish national allies, his apparent commitment to enforce the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings demanding the release of Demirtas and Yuksekdag's gave hope to many of their supporters.

Sweden's government is set to extradite a Turkish citizen and self-declared supporter of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) who was convicted of drugs offences in Turkey.

The Swedish justice ministry told the Associated Press that Stockholm had made the decision on Monday following a Swedish Supreme Court ruling last month allowing the extradition.

Mehmet Kokulu was convicted in 2014 in Adana, Turkey, over possession of 1.8kg of cannabis and was sentenced to four years and seven months in prison, as well as a fine.

He said he was released from prison on parole in Turkey and, because he committed no crimes in the subsequent years, he legally travelled to Sweden in 2018.

However, according to a Swedish Supreme Court decision published on 30 May, the extradition is to permit him to serve the remainder of his sentence, which Turkey says consists of two years and seven months.
