Ex-Pakistani PM Imran Khan claims US plotted against him after Russia deal "IndyWatch Feed World"

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan, who was arrested last month on corruption charges, has claimed in a wide-ranging interview with Newsweek published on Saturday that the United States exerted diplomatic pressure to remove him from office last year. Speaking to the US publication, Khan said he visited Russia on the same day that Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine in February 2022 - and that while he didn't agree with the motives behind the offensive, he refused calls to condemn the action, so as to not jeopardize a trade agreement. The US "wanted us, through the United Nations, to condemn Russia," said Khan, who explained that his government had arranged an agreement to import "cheap oil" and wheat from Moscow. "If we condemn them right now, what about the impact it's going to have on our population?"

China and Russia building most nuclear power plants, the main goal is to market them to developing countries "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

China and Russia account for 70% of new nuclear plants

Exports used as diplomatic card while Western nations fall behind

NAOYUKI TOYAMA, Nikkei staff writerJune 11, 2023

TOKYO Russia and China are building up an outsized presence in the field of nuclear power, with the countries accounting for nearly 70% of reactors under construction or in planning worldwide.

Notably, 33 of the reactors are being constructed or planned outside each respective country. Russia has the largest number of overseas reactors with 19, and despite growing opposition from Europe and the U.S. following its invasion of Ukraine, it maintains a strong global influence in nuclear power.

In April, Russian President Vladimir Putin participated remotely in a ceremony to mark the arrival of the first fuel at the under-construction Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey

Russias nuclear power diplomacy is extending to other countries as well. In May, Rosatom began full-scale construction on Unit 3 of the Dabaa nuclear plant in Egypt, the countrys first.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with Rosatom officials this month to discuss the companys plans to build a new nuclear power plant in the countrys south. Hungary opposes sanctions the European Union has imposed on Rosatom.

Many developing countries take a positive view of Russia, Kacper Szulecki of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs told British scientific journal Nature Energy. Russias acceptance of spent nuclear fuel is also attractive to emerging countries.

Meanwhile, China is deepening its engagement with Pakistan..

China also plans to build a nuclear plant in Argentina

The U.S., Japan and Europe are hoping to catch up using small modular reactors (SMRs), considered fourth-generation technology..

Another issue is nuclear fuel. Uranium enrichment has become the weak link for Western nations. Enrichment facilities are limited, and Russia is the global leader for tha...

Symbolic connections between the Pashupati Seal and the Lascaux Shaft Scene "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Pashupati Seal was recovered from Mohenjo-Daro, Indus Valley (now in Pakistan) and thought to date to around 2000 BCE, It shows a seated Master-of-Animals figure, surrounded by 4 opposing animals, which is consistent with Gurshtein's theory of an early system of zodiacal dating using precession of the equinoxes. Many other Master-of-Animals figures are known; see here. The problem with this Master-of-Animals is that the zodiac doesn't conform to one we know. At 2000 BCE the solsticial/equinoctial constellations are; Taurus (spring), Capricornus (winter), Libra (autumn) and Leo (summer). Thus, using the Greek zodiac we should have a bovine, sea-goat, scales and feline, respectively. Of course, the scales are not zoomorphic and the sea-goat is specific to lower Mesopotamia. So we shouldn't expect to see them anyway. So this leaves the bovine and feline symbols, which are consistent with the Greek zodiac. But we also have an elephant and rhino. Can these represent zodiacal...

Iran's supreme leader on Sunday said that reaching a deal with the West over Tehran's nuclear activities was not an issue if the country's nuclear infrastructure remained intact.

"There is nothing wrong with the agreement [with the West], but the infrastructure of our nuclear industry should not be touched," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted as saying by state media.

Khamenei, who has the last say on all state matters, added that Tehran should continue working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog, "under the framework of safeguards".

Iran has long denied wanting to acquire nuclear weapons.

"Accusations about Tehran seeking nuclear weapons are a lie and they know it. We do not want nuclear arms because of our religious beliefs. Otherwise they [the West] would not have been able to stop it," said Khamenei.

The supreme leader's comments come days after Middle East Eye reported that Iran and the...

Taliban sharply reduces opium cultivation in Afghanistan "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Taliban appears to have sharply reduced opium cultivation in Afghanistan, the world's largest producer of the illicit drug. In April 2022, the militant group banned the cultivation, production, and trafficking of all illicit narcotics. Annual opium cultivation has dropped by as much as 80 percent compared to last year, according to new research by David Mansfield, a leading expert on Afghanistan's drugs trade who worked with Alcis, a British firm specializing in satellite analysis. Mansfield said the Taliban had "exceeded expectations and reduced poppy cultivation to levels not seen since 2001," when the militant group was ousted from power by the U.S.-led invasion. Around 80 percent of the opium produced in Afghanistan comes from the southern province of Helmand. Mansfield said satellite imagery appeared to show that in Helmand "poppy cultivation has fallen from more than 120,000 hectares in 2022 to less than 1,000 hectares in 2023."

The US Senate confirmed Dilawar Syed's nomination as deputy administrator of the Small Business Administration, making him the highest-ranking Muslim official in the US government.

The Senate voted 54-42 on Thursday, ending more than two years of delays in Congress. President Joe Biden first nominated Syed in 2021 but everything stalled after Republicans did not appear for votes. Biden renominated him again in 2023.

Senator Ben Cardin, who chairs the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, said ahead of the vote: It is about time we get this done.

Syed was born in Pakistan. He is a California-based entrepreneur connected to software, health care, and artificial intelligence. During the Obama administration, Syed played an active role in promoting the State Departments global entrepreneurship programme.

He also served on Obamas White House Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and chaired the White House initiative on the commission's economic growth committee.

Syed was also previously affiliated with Emgage and served as an Emgage Pac board member. Emgage describes itself as "the first...

Pakistan Assembly elections 2023: countdown begins

It may appear too premature to talk about a post-electoral scenario in Pakistan when the debate over the holding of elections and dates for say the Punjab Assembly elections have yet to be decided. The Supreme Courts May 14 deadline has passed and may be forgotten, as a chastened Chief Justice Atta Bandial is unlikely to make a hasty judgement on vote dates, especially after the Election Commission of Pakistan has questioned the SCs power over poll dates. However, the National Assemblys mandate ends on August 16, and elections must be held by mid-October unless another political crisis arises. Elections for both the regional and national assemblies will take place at the same time.

New players such as the Jahangir Khan Tareen (JKT) faction and the acquisition of the PTI dissidents by other parties may dictate the evolving situation. Yet, in all confidence, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah predicts three splinter groups emergence in the future. He seems to be calm on Jahangir Tareens issue and expects that shouldnt be a threat to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Punjab, and is adamantly boastful of their vote bank. His confidence comes from the fact that Imran Khans Tehreek Insaaf (PTI) has been effectively marginalised after the May 9 riots including charges faced due to attacks on key military installations, and anticipating that the PML N will have an advantage. The repeat instability in Pakista...

Zaki Rasooli was a professional mixed martial arts fighter in Afghanistan, before fleeing the country after the Taliban captured Kabul (MEE/Ali Latifi)

When Zaki Rasooli arrived in Abu Dhabi in October 2021, the mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter thought hed only be in the Tasameem resettlement camp for a few days before being airlifted to the United States to start a new life.

Instead, he spent 18 months in misery.

By the time he arrived in the Emirati capital, it had only been two months since the Taliban had returned to power in Afghanistan, but it was already evident to Rasooli and other evacuees that the United Arab Emirates had far surpassed the 5,000 Afghans the country said it would house until they could be resettled in a third country.

Less than a month later, Rasooli and the 3,000 other Afghans in the camp lost even more hope when Washington suspended its daily chartered flights from the UAE to the US on 7 November.

As time went on and answers became more scarce, Rasooli said the Afghan evacuees began to feel suffocated in the detention-like conditions inside the camp, which he was told should have housed no more than 2,000 people.
