*The Fall of the Turkish Model* "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

The author is Cihan Tual, and the subtitle is How the Arab Uprisings Brought Down Islamic Liberalism, though the book is more concretely a comparison across Egypt and Tunisia as well, with frequent remarks on Iran.  Here is one excerpt:

This led to what Kevan Harris has called the subcontractor state: an economy which is neither centralized under a governmental authority not privatized and liberalized.  The subcontractor state has decentralized its social and economic roles without liberalizing the economy or even straightforwardly privatizing the state-owned enterprises.  As a result, the peculiar third sector of the Iranian economy has expanded in rather complicated and unpredictable ways.  Rather than leading to liberalization privatization under revolutionary corporatism intensified and twisted the significance of organization such as the bonyadsPrivatization under the populist-conservative Ahmedinejad exploited the ambiguities of the tripartite division of the economyPrivatization entailed the sale of public assets not to private companies but to nongovernmental public enterprises (such as pension funds, the bonyads and military contractors).

This book is one useful background source for the current electoral process in Turkey.

Bashar al-Assads full speech at the Arab League "IndyWatch Feed War"

The 2023 Arab League summit, officially the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the Summit Level, is a meeting of heads of state and government of member states of the League of Arab States that took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 19 May 2023. All countries were represented at this meeting, including Syria, which returned triumphantly after its membership was suspended in 2011.

Speech of Bashar al-Assad, President of the Syrian Arab Republic

Transcript:

Your Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Your Majesties, Highnesses, and Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen

Where does one begin his speech when the dangers are no longer imminent, but realized? He begins with the hope that motivates achievement and work. And when ailments accumulate, a doctor can treat them individually, provided he addresses the underlying disease causing them.

Therefore, we must look for the main issues that threaten our future and produce our crises, so that we do not drown and drown future generations in dealing with the consequences rather than the causes. Threats contain risks and opportunities. Today, we are presented with an opportunity as the international situation changes, and a multipolar world appears as a result of the dominance of the West, which is devoid of principles, ethics, friends, and partners. It is a historic opportunity to reorganize our affairs with the least possible foreign intervention, which requires repositioning ourselves in this world that is shaping today to be an active participant in it, and investing in the positive atmosphere resulting from the reconciliations that preceded the summit and made the situation as it is today.

It is an opportunity to solidify our culture in the face of the impending collapse with modern liberalism that targets the innate human nature and strips people of their ethics and identity, and to define our Arab identity with its civilizational dimension, as it is falsely accused of racism and chauvinism in order to make it in conflict with its natural national, ethnic, and religious components, so that our societies die in their struggle within themselves, and not with others.

There are many too many topics that cannot be discussed for lack of time, and summits would not be enough to evoke them all They do not begin with the crimes of the Zionist entity, rejected by Arabs, against the Palestinian resistance people, nor do they end with the danger of the Ottoman expansionist thought grafted with a deviant Muslim Brotherhood flavour ; and they are inseparable from the challenge of development as a top priority for our developing...

It took four days for Turkish presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu to emerge following his first-round election defeat on Sunday.

Kilicdaroglu addressed a conference hall full of party supporters with energetic but divisive rhetoric.

He called on everyone in Turkey to make a choice between a government led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which he said would bring 10 million more refugees, and himself, promising to protect Turkish borders and send all refugees back.

This campaign will be tense, polarising, and more nationalist, one Turkish opposition official from Kilicdaroglus Republican Peoples Party (CHP) told Middle East Eye.

This a simple choice between Kilicdaroglu or Erdogan. And our main theme is fear, we will remind everyone what the next five years will be like if he is re-elected.

Press Review: Grain Deal Lives to See Two More Months and Africa Puts Out Own Peace Offer

Top stories from the Russian press on Thursday, May 18th

AP Photo/Andrew Kravchenko

MOSCOW, May 18. /TASS/. The Black Sea grain deal has been extended for two more months; African nations are following in Chinas footsteps by offering to act as a mediator for resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict; and Beijing is taking a new tack in how it cooperates with Central Asian nations. These stories topped Thursdays newspaper headlines across Russia.

Media: Black Sea grain deal gets new lease on life, extended for another two months

The Black Sea Grain Initiative was extended for another two months just one day before its expiration date. Although Russia still has a number of grievances with the arrangement, Moscow did agree to extend the deal, first for 120 days (in November) and then for 60 days more (in March), Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes.

Given this harvest seasons record grain crop (nearly 158 mln metric tons), Russia will be able to export a record volume of about 57 mln tons. Despite the difficulties with payments, insurance and vessels, exporters have learned how to operate under sanctions, Vladimir Petrichenko, director of the ProZerno analysis firm, said. However, the latest move to extend the grain deal will have the effect of pushing grain prices further down. Petrichenko pointed out that Russian grain had already been trading at a discount for the entire season. Had export barriers been removed, exporters would not have to bear additional costs.

The political aspect of the deals extension also needs to be taken into account. Gokhan Cinkara, assistant professor at Turkeys Necmettin Erbakan University, explained to Izvestia that the agreements prolongation could be seen "as a move strengthening the position of [Turkish] President Erdogan." "Erdogan has always held a balanced foreign policy position on Russia, prioritizing relations based on bilateral interests. Bearing in mind that Turkey is a NATO member makes it easier to understand the value of special rel...

Turkey criticised the US for dispatching a warship to the divided island of Cyprus on Wednesday, accusing Washington of disrupting the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The USS Arleigh Burke, a guided-missile destroyer, arrived in Limassol, Cyprus, for a scheduled visit on Tuesday.

The Turkish foreign ministry issued a statement critiquing the move: The steps taken in the region by the US which disrupt the balance at the expense of the Turkish Cypriot side damage [United State's] long-standing neutral position.

The statement is the second time in less than two months that Turkey has criticised the US for docking warships on the ethnically divided island. In April, the nuclear-powered submarine USS San Juan landed in the port of Limassol, prompting a similar rebuke from Ankara.

Turkey and Greece - Cyprus closest ally - are enmeshed in a series of disputes over maritime rights, the sovereignty of Aegean islands, natural gas and airspace boundaries. Greece warned in September that a Ukraine-style war could erupt with Turkey, but ties thawed with goodwill diplomacy following a deadly earthquake in Turkey and a train accident in Greece.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogans aides believe he will comfortably emerge victorious in the runoff presidential election on 28 May, so are focusing on running a more unifying and positive campaign than previously.

A senior official at Erdogans ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) said they werent surprised by the first round results, where Erdogan received 49.4 percent, 0.6 percent short of an outright victory.

The main opposition candidate, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, secured just 44.96 percent.

We had a poll in our own hands exactly along the lines of these results, said the official. We were excited.

The official said the Erdogan campaign had already prepared a strategy for the runoff, which meant it was able to push out an ad on Monday hours after the results came in, which featured a song by Turkish arabesque singer Kibariye and American Della Miles.

Turkey's main opposition presidential candidate has promised to expel all refugees from the country in a bid to attract nationalist voters ahead of the second round of elections on 28 May.

In his first public address since the elections last Sunday, in which he came in almost five points behind President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Kemal Kilicdaroglu criticised the longterm ruler's immigration policies.

"Erdogan, you did not protect the borders and honour of the country," he said.

"You have deliberately brought more than 10 million refugees to this country... as soon as I come to power, I will send all the refugees home."

There are around four million refugees in Turkey, according to the United Nations, the majority of which are Syrian, who are officially classified as "guests" due to the country's longstanding policy of not recognising non-Europeans as official refugees.

Senior Turkish officials have criticised French magazine Charlie Hebdo for a cover cartoon depicting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following elections over the weekend.

The drawing shows Erdogan in a bathtub, in reference to French singer Claude Francois (Cloclo), who was electrocuted to death while in the bath in 1978. "Like Cloclo, only fate will save us from him," the cover states.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said: Shameless Charlie Hebdo has yet to possess an ounce of humanity [and] continues to insult the Turkish people.

Meanwhile, Fahrettin Altun, Erdogan's communications director, described the publication as "disgusting".

The family of a Turkish-Emirati dual national are sounding the alarm a week after he disappeared in Jordanian custody, fearing he may have been extradited to the United Arab Emirates.

Khalaf Abdulrahman al-Romaithi, 58, was convicted by an Emirati court in 2013 in a mass trial of 94 critics of the Emirati government - dubbed the "UAE94" - which human rights groups have widely criticised as grossly unfair.

Convicted to 15 years in prison in absentia, Romaithi has been living in Turkey. On 7 May, he travelled from Turkey to Amman where he was detained at Queen Alia International Airport after a biometric check brought up a warrant that Jordanian police issued at the UAE's request.

He was released on bail but was rearrested a day later by plainclothed police officers. At a hearing on 9 May, his lawyer says a copy of an extradition request from the UAE was presented and he was transferred to prison awaiting a 16 May hearing.

Romaithi's family and lawyer say this was the last time they saw or spoke to him.

WASHINGTON, May 18. /TASS/. Statements by US authorities on the grain deal are blatant lies and Washington intentionally forgets about the "package" nature of these agreements, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said on Wednesday.

"The statements of the representatives of the administration are outrageous. Instead of calmly and without politicizing fixing the successful completion of the consultations in Istanbul, local officials again rushed to criticize the Russian Federation in every possible way. Accuse us of allegedly creating artificial obstacles in the way of grain shipments to the poorest states. The notorious theses about the weaponization of hunger again went into play," the Russian Embassys Telegram channel quoted him as commenting on the reaction by US authorities to the extension of the Black Sea initiative.

"Such comments are not just a distortion of facts, but outright deception. Washington deliberately forgets about the package nature of the Istanbul agreements. About the specific requirements laid down in the Russia-UN memorandum that are not being met. We mean the restoration of the admission of Russian ships to foreign ports, the normalization of the situation with the insurance of dry cargo ships, the removal of barriers to the sale of agricultural equipment and technologies to our country, the reconnection of Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT system, the launch of the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline," the envoy explained.

Russia Confirms Grain Deal Extension by Two Months Foreign Ministry

Maria Zakharova went on to say that Moscow's primary views of the deal have not changed

Chris McGrath/Getty Images

MOSCOW, May 17. /TASS/. Moscow confirms that the grain deal has been extended for two more months, providing an opportunity to help ensure global food security, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that the grain deal had been extended for another 60 days. "We confirm the Turkish president's announcement of a two-month extension of the Black Sea initiative, which is an opportunity to help ensure global food security not in words but in deeds, to help first and foremost the countries that need it most," she said, adding that "imbalances" in the grain deal's execution should be "corrected as soon as possible."

Zakharova went on to say that Moscow's primary views of the deal have not changed.

Agreements on the export of food and fertilizers from Ukraine to the international market were concluded on July 22, 2022, for 120 days and extended in November for the same period. One of the agreements regulates the order of grain supplies from the Kiev-controlled ports of Odessa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny. Moreover, a memorandum was inked by Russia and the UN on lifting export restrictions for Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to global markets. Moscow notes that the second part of the agreement is not being implemented. On March 18, 2023, Russia announced that the deal was extended for 60 days, warning that this would be enough time to assess the efficacy of the memorandum signed with the UN. The Russian side has repeatedly stressed that the future decision on extension of the deal depends on implementation of the Russian part of the agreement, adding that the lack of progress on that issue threatens the future of the initiative.

The EU will ban Russian LNG 'sooner than later' Spain's energy minister says "IndyWatch Feed World"

European Union countries will agree sooner rather than later to ban import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, Spain Energy Minister Teresa Ribera told Reuters on Tuesday. "This will be coming sooner than later," she said in an interview on Tuesday when asked if the EU will muster the political will for such a move. With imports of Russian crude and oil products banned and the flow of Russian gas via pipelines sharply reduced, imports of Russian LNG are in the spotlight as the EU tries to deprive Russia of energy export revenue. Comment: Well, it has sharply reduced because the US and its allies blew up two pipelines. However, gas continues to flow through the Turkish and Ukrainian lines, as well as some Russian LNG making its way to the West via highly expensive and unreliable shipping routes.

MEMO | May 17, 2023

Ankara, on Wednesday, called on Germany to release Turkish journalists arrested in Frankfurt after reporting on the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), the group behind the 2016 defeated coup in Turkiye, Anadolu News Agency reports.

The detention of Frankfurt Bureau representatives of Sabah newspaper by the German police today, without justification, is an act of harassment and intimidation against the Turkish press. We strongly condemn this heinous act, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

We expect the immediate release of journalists who were targeted by a false denunciation of a FETO member for their reporting on the terrorist organisation FETOs activities in Germany, it added.

Necessary initiatives have been taken in Germany regarding the issue, and our strong reaction is conveyed to the German ambassador to Ankara, Jurgen Schulz, who was summoned today, the Ministry said.

Voter anger over Erdogans interference in Syria, war fallout, cost him dearly: Analyst "IndyWatch Feed War"

Press TV May 17, 2023

A Lebanese political expert says incumbent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan failed to get the support of people in urban areas in the recent election mainly due to his interference in Syria and the fallout of his intervention in the war.

In an interview with the Press TV website, Nasser Qandil, editor-in-chief of Lebanons al-Binaa newspaper, noted that most of the youths in cities did not vote for Erdogan who has been at the pinnacle of Turkish politics for more than two decades with the slogan 20 years is enough.

The issue of Syrian refugees and Erdogans role in the Syrian war was among the reasons behind the decrease in his votes in cities, he said.

This is while his rival has promised to transfer refugees to their country within two years and deport them if necessary.

Erdogan gained 49.5 percent of the vote in Sundays presidential race compared to 44.9 percent for his challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

As neither candidate reached the 50 percent threshold needed to win outright, a runoff vote will take place on May 28.

Erdogan took home fewer votes in 2023 than he did in the 2018 presidential contest.

Qandil said that in the second round of the election, Erdogan will face challenges such as heavy economic and social costs of Syrian refugees residing in Turkey, the growing unemployment rate, the rent surge, and the rising competition between Turkish and Syrian workers.

With the support of Russia, Iran and Persian Gulf states, Erdogan can draw a two-year framework for the Turkish withdrawal from Syria, the return of refugees, and the dispersal of terrorists from Syrias northeast and northwest, he said.

The second round may give better opportunities to Erdogans rival, unless he bravely plays his trump card and voices readiness to formulate a timetable for the return of Syrian refugees.

For more than a decade, Turkey has backed militants fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and sent its own troops into the Arab countrys northern areas.

In recent months, however, the strategically-located US-led NATO member has taken steps to normalize relations with Syria.

Also in his interview, the Lebanese political analyst compared Erdogan with Kilicdaroglu, saying the incumbent president represents a political religion close to the West, while the latter acts for the Western-oriented and anti-religious secular movement.

Regarding international developments, he argued that Erdogan tends to pay attention to political and economic partnerships, but his rival wants Turkey to play a regional role without being drawn into war and expansionism.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a two-month extension of a UN-backed deal under which Ukraine grain ships can cross the Black Sea to global markets.

On Wednesday, Erdogan said: "With the efforts of our country, the support of our Russian friends, the contribution of our Ukrainian friends, it was decided to prolong the Black Sea grain deal for two more months."

The announcement came one day before the deal was due to expire.

Russia agreed not to block ships leaving two Ukrainian harbours, Erdogan said, expressing his hope that the deal would be "beneficial for all the parties".

He thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for their roles in extending the agreement.

Ukraine was one of the world's major grain exporters before Russia invaded in February 2022. Russian warships blockaded Ukraine's Black Sea ports, sparking a global food crisis.
