Patriot Act on Steroids: Bill to Ban TikTok Could Lead to Sweeping Surveillance and Censorship in U.S., Critics Say "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Suzanne Burdick, Ph.D. | The Defender | May 19, 2023

U.S. lawmakers are considering a bill that would grant the U.S. government vast new powers to surveil and censor U.S. citizens.

The RESTRICT Act  the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act, or Senate Bill 686  would give the federal government new powers ostensibly to mitigate national security threats posed by technology products from countries that the U.S. deems adversarial.

The bill would grant the U.S. secretary of commerce the authority to identify, deter, disrupt, prevent, prohibit, investigate, or otherwise mitigate national security risks associated with technology linked to a foreign adversary.

There are only six countries on the foreign adversary list China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Russia and Cuba but the bill allows the secretary and Congress to add any other country if it became necessary.

The bill does not stipulate the criteria for adding a country.

Additionally, the bill would give the commerce secretary the power to negotiate, enter into, impose and enforce any mitigation measure in response to national security risks.

The bills broad and vague language puts a great deal of power into the hands of the executive branch, according to critics, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a leading nonprofit organization defending civil liberties in the digital world.

The EFF called the bill a dangerous substitute for comprehensive data privacy legislation.

Meanwhile, the White House applauded the bill, stating that it would empower the United States government to prevent certain foreign governments from exploiting technology services operating in the United States in a w...

How Sadrs foes are trying to suck him back into Iraqi public life

Undermined from inside and outside his movement, keeping out of politics is proving a difficult and dangerous game for the influential Shia cleric

Muqtada al-Sadr leads Friday prayers alongside his supporters at Great Mosque of Kufa outside central holy city of Najaf, on 4 November 2022 (AFP)

As the final days of the holy month of Ramadan approached, Muqtada al-Sadr busied himself with preparations for his annual itikaf, a period of reflection to be spent in the great mosque of Kufa.

To those around him, it seemed clear he was trying to divert his attention away from events in the world outside the walls of his home in central Najafs Hanana.

It has been almost a year since the influential Shia cleric announced his withdrawal from politics. Over the past few months, as a new Iraqi government was formed without his participation, he resolutely refused to enter into any political dialogue or receive visitors trying to speak to him about developments or issues the country was facing.

Sadrs entourage could see how difficult it was for Sadr to remain calm as he made his arrangements for the three-day Kufa mosque retreat. It was plainly difficult for him to stay away from the daily drama of Iraqi politics.

Sadr had just a few days before he was due to head to Kufa. He asked who would join him in itikaf, and what food they would be given for their days of reflection, one of Sadrs close aides told Middle East Eye.

Railway of Resistance: A grand project to connect Iran, Iraq, Syria "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Mohamad Hasan Sweidan | The Cradle | May 19 2023

Sir Halford John Mackinder, one of Britains most prominent theorists in the field of geopolitics, discusses the significance of land connectivity between nations in his 1904 essay called The Geographical Pivot of History.

Besides introducing his notable Heartland Theory, Mackinder argued that advancements in transportation technology, such as the development of railways, have altered the balance of power in international politics by enabling a powerful state or group of states to expand its influence along transport routes.

The establishment of blocs, like the EU or BRICS, for instance, aims to enhance communication between member states. This objective has positive implications for the economy and helps reduce the risk of tensions among them.

The cost of such tensions has increased considerably, given the growing benefits and common interests achieved through strengthened ties between nations. Consequently, reinforcing connections within a specific region has a positive impact on the entire area.

Therefore, any infrastructure project between countries cannot be viewed solely from an economic standpoint; its geopolitical effects must also be highlighted.

West Asia connected by railway

In July 2018, Saeed Rasouli, head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI), announced the countrys intention to construct a railway line connecting the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea, the Iran-Iraq-Syria railway link. This ambitious project would run from Basra in southern Iraq to Albu Kamal on the Iraqi-Syrian border and then extend to Deir Ezzor in northeastern Syria.

Undoubtedly, this project strengthens communication between the countries of West Asia and increases the need for other powers to collaborate with this important region, which is strategically located in parts of Mackinders Heartland and Nicholas Spykmans Rimland of Eurasia.

Moreover, in accordance with Mackinders proposition, it can be argued that this railway project holds geopolitical significance for the three involved countries Iran, Iraq, and Syria and for West Asia as a whole.

The concept of a railway link between Iran and Iraq emerged over a decade ago. In 2011, Iran completed the 17-kilometer...

Syrias return to Arab fold sign of Global South manifesting itself: Diplomat "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Somayeh Khalili | Press TV | May 19, 2023

Syrias triumphant return to the Arab League fold after almost 12 years shows not just that Arab countries now recognize the failure of the regime change project in Damascus but also that they can defy the United States, according to a former British diplomat.

In an exclusive interview with the Press TV website, Peter Ford, a former UK diplomat who served as ambassador in Syria between 2003 and 2006 and before that in Bahrain from 1999 to 2003, said the importance of the recent turn of events in the Arab world goes beyond Syria.

It is a symptom of the development of a new multipolar world order where not just Russia, China and Iran refuse to accept US hegemony but also countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Brazil and South Africa. This is the Global South manifesting itself, Ford asserted, referring to Arab normalizations.

Syria has restored diplomatic ties with many Arab countries recently after years of hostility, including Saudi Arabia, and is set to formally return to the Arab League, a 22-member body of Arab states.

This wave of normalization comes more than a decade after Syrias Arab neighbors severed their diplomatic ties with the Bashar al-Assad government in Damascus and demanded his ouster.

On Thursday, Assad touched down in the Saudi port city of Jeddah to attend the Arab League summit, marking another step toward the full restoration of ties between Syria and its Arab neighbors.

Ford said Syrias return to the Arab League, in defiance of US warnings, has raised expectations that the Arab world will now show more support for Palestine and less concern for their ties with Israel.

The Abraham Accords was founded on hostility to Iran and fear of the US. These conditions no longer apply, the former British diplomat told the Press TV website.

On whether these developments will bring regional countries closer in fighting the menace of terrorism, Ford said he expects much more intra-Arab security cooperation now, adding that Syria has more experience with this phenomenon than any country in the world.

The veteran diplomat noted the US interference in the Arab country hasnt ended but that it has got tired and is going through the motions with no real hope of achieving anything.

It keeps up the economic war, the propaganda war and legal war, and it maintains a military presence to control Syrias oil, but its all to no purpose, he said about the US.

The restoration of diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Ford said, augurs well for the region, as both countries have a shared interest in modernization and the peaceful Persian Gulf.

Never Mind Who Lost Syria, Who the Hell Lost Saudi Arabia? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Syria back in the fold of the Arab League its an image which the regime change gang in Washington never wanted world to see. More to the point: as the Kingdom begins to face east, the US empire is losing one of its greatest assets in maintaining its global empire.

Peter Ford

21st Century Wire

It is hard to overstate the significance of Syrias readmission to the Arab League and President Assads attendance at the Jeddah Arab summit. The significance goes way beyond Syria itself.

Lets get straight to the point. Its a massive blow for the US and its allies. No wonder the commentary from the Washington think tanks and publications like the Financial Times is so sour. Its not just that the hated Assad is breaking out of US-imposed isolation, and that the world is being reminded of US policy failure in Syria.

More importantly, its absolutely gobsmacking that a previously fully aligned top US client, Saudi Arabia, should take the lead in flouting Americas wish to keep Syria isolated. For it was indeed Saudi Arabia, fresh from showing the US the finger by coming to a Chinese sponsored tension-reducing agreement with Iran, which followed up by corralling other Arab League members into accepting the return of Syria. This also came after Saudi Arabia refused to pump more oil to help Biden get lower gas prices in the US.

Some in Washington try to console themselves with the thought that more Saudi influence in Damascus will help diminish Irans presumed hold over Syria. They are missing the point. With the outbreak of peace between Saudi and Iran Saudi has no need to fear Iranian influence in Syria.

Saudi appears to have woken up to the fact that the only gainers from tension between itself and Iran were the US
and Israel.

The moment of awakening may actually have come in 2019 but went unnoticed at the time. This was when...

US General: Israeli-Made Iron Dome System Ready For Deployment in Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Connor Freeman and Will Porter | The Libertarian  Institute | May 18, 2023

One of two Israeli-manufactured Iron Dome batteries owned by the Pentagon is ready to be deployed to Ukraine, a US general told the Senate on Thursday. Tel Aviv has so far refused to supply the anti-missile system to Kiev, for fear of provoking Russia and risking its ability to freely bomb Moscows ally Syria.

During a Senate Strategic Forces subcommittee hearing on Thursday, Senator Angus King pressed a senior Pentagon official on why Ukraine has not yet received the Iron Dome, noting the US role in creating the air defense system.

We sent something like $3 billion to Israel to develop it Wouldnt this be a very important resource for the Ukrainians since their principal problem right now is missile defense? the lawmaker asked.

Army Space and Missile Defense Command chief General Daniel Karbler replied that there are currently two Iron Dome batteries in US inventories, one of which is now ready for transfer to Kiev.

Once completed new equipment training, new equipment fielding. It is prepared for deployment. The other one is wrapping up its new equipment training right now. So the army does have one available for deployment if we get a request, he said.

While the US has spent some $2.6 billion to fund the Iron Dome since 2011, it is produced in Israel, and Washington must seek Tel Avivs approval before any transfer to a third country. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly urged Israel to supply the system since Russias invasion commenced last year, but Tel Aviv has been reluctant to fulfill the requests, which could jeopardize its delicate relations with Moscow.

For years, Israel has dropped bombs on Syria a key Russian ally in the Middle East on a near-weekly basis. Tel Aviv claims its constant airstrikes are needed to counter Iranian proxies in the country, though they routinely kill Syrian soldiers and civilians and have damaged civil infrastructure such as airports.

Russia still maintains a signif...

The recent visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Syria marked a significant achievement for Iran, as it was seen partly as a response to the normalization process between Israel and several Arab countries. The visit was presented by both countries as a demonstration of unity amidst a changing regional reality and a victory for the so-called axis of resistance. It took place against the backdrop of the improving relations between Iran and Syria and several Arab states, ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran on Syrian soil, and Irans efforts to enhance coordination among the various elements comprising the resistance axis.

The transmutation of the Arabs failed effort to wipe out the Jewish state into their own cosmic tragedy, together with the adoption of this counter-narrative by intellectuals and self-styled humanitarians in the West, is noteworthy in itself. But for the UN, and the General Assembly specifically, to play along is particularly ironic for a number of reasons.

Iran USA: Tanker War in the Strait of Hormuz "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

Iran - USA: Tanker War in the Strait of Hormuz

Due to the fact that oil is always a geopolitical factor, history over the last century demonstrates that there is no such thing as little oil. Many new conflicts have occurred commencing from the beginning of the 20th century as a result of oil. And today, oil still plays a solely geopolitical role in the conflict between the parties, with the ability to rekindle both small-scale and major wars.

One of the few nations with significant oil reserves is Iran. Iran is the third-largest oil producer in the world, with reserves that account for 13.5% of global oil reserves. Ahvaz, Marun, Aghajari, Gachsaran, Karanj, Bangestan, Dorud, Salman, Abuzar, Sirri, Soroosh, etc. are some of the largest Iranian oil fields. Iranian oil fields are located both onshore and offshore. Due to US sanctions imposed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran was unable to increase oil production and export it to international markets, which materially reduced its ability to compete with other oil-producing nations like Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, etc.

Iran is currently, however, forging beneficial connections with China and India, whose expanding production capacities need more oil. As you know, in March 2021, Beijing signed an agreement with Tehran to invest into the Iranian economy for the largest amount (more than $450 billion) for 25 years. A part of these funds will be utilized to modernize the Iranian oil and gas industrys technology, as well as to create new energy and communications infrastructure. As a result of the agreement, China will be able to purchase Iranian oil at competitive prices, ending years of economic isolation for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

China engaged in systemic diplomacy, merging economic and political enterprises and bolstering regional security. As can be seen from this particular case of Iran, Beijing was successful in restoring diplomatic relations between Tehran and Riyadh, whose Embassies have already resumed operations. As a result of such diplomatic accomplishments, China is restoring Irani...

Israeli officials concerned plan could be used to 'tie Israel's hands' from taking unilateral action against Iran's nuclear programme

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin holds press conference in Brussels at end of two-day meeting of Nato defence ministers, on 15 February 2023 (AFP)

The US has asked Israel to engage in joint military planning against Iran, offering a proposal that US officials have described as "unprecedented" as a means of boosting bilateral military cooperation, according to a report by Axios.

The proposal was floated during recent visits to Israel by the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, General Mark Milley, Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, and Centcom commander General Erik Kurilla.

The proposal has been met with some scepticism in Israel,  according to Axios, with officials concerned it could be used to tie Israel's hands from striking Iran if the US objects. A senior Israeli official told Axios they are seeking to clarify what joint military planning actually means and whether it pertains to intelligence sharing or actual joint operations.

A March Department of Defence statement following Austins visit to Israel said the US defence chief discussed the two countries military partnership, along with threats posed by Iran in the region, and America's ironclad commitment to Israel's security.

Israel and Iran have engaged in a deadly shadow war for years. Israel frequently strikes Iranian targets and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah in Syria, in a campaign Israeli leaders have dubbed the war between the wars.

Israel and the New Middle East "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

Israel and the New Middle East

In 2020, when Israel, backed by the US, signed the Abraham Accords with the UAE and some other Middle Eastern states, the Israeli government looked well in charge of the trajectory of the peace process in the Middle East. Three years later, peace-making is no longer made in the US or Israel, as Chinas success in mediating between Iran and Saudi Arabia has significantly shifted Middle Eastern geopolitics local and international dynamics. Locally, more and more Arab states are now pursuing normalisation; internationally, Beijing, rather than Washington, is playing the lead role. This adds to Israels troubles, as it can no longer influence these developments even indirectly via Beijing for obvious reasons. At the same time, if the underlying logic of the Abraham Accords was to expand Israeli influence in the Arab world and further isolate Iran, this is no longer possible.

While the US and Israeli officials have stated that the Iran-Saudia deal doesnt impact the politics and the possibility of the possible extension of the Abraham Accords, it remains that the deal has not materialised despite various rounds of talks. While one of the key reasons is the change of government in the US, with the Biden administration not sharing the Trump administrations enthusiasm for both peace in the Middle East and deep ties with Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia, too, is not keen to make this deal. In other words, the China-led new peace process in the Middle East is nothing short of a setback for Israel.

This is most clearly evident from the way Saudi position vis--vis talks with Israel has hardened in the past few months or so. As reported in the mainstream media in the US as well, not only is Saudi Arabia demanding additional security guarantees from Washington but is also seeking the latters help to develop its civilian nuclear programme. This is besides...

Archaeologists discover that Iranian farmers grew rice about 3,000 years ago "IndyWatch Feed World"

Archaeologists excavating in Iran's Mazandaran region have revealed that Iranian farmers were cultivating rice as far back as 3000 years ago. Based on the results of an archaeological survey conducted by experts from the Peking University, rice cultivation in the Mazandaran region dates some 3,000 years, ISNA quoted Iranian archaeologist Ebrahim Amirkolai as saying on Thursday. The study relies on evidence mostly accumulated from excavations conducted on Qale-Kesh, an archaeological site near Amol, the Amirkolai said. India was spotlighted for explicitly targeting religious minorities in the US State Departments newly released 2022 Religious Freedom Report, joining a list of countries that includes Russia, China and Iran for its treatment of religious minorities.

The report details a range of concerns about religious freedom in India. Among them is the continued prohibition against religious minorities, and systemic discrimination directed against Muslims - including cow vigilantism, which results in attacks for alleged cow slaughter or beef trade.

We're continuing to encourage the government to condemn violence and hold accountable and protect all groups who engage in rhetoric that's dehumanizing towards religious minorities and all groups who engage in violence against religious communities and other communities in India," a senior State Department official told reporters at a press briefing on Monday.

In one case, the report details an incident in the coastal state of Gujarat where four Muslim men were publicly flogged for allegedly throwing stones and injuring Hindu worshippers.

Another incident occurred in Madhya Pradesh, a central state in India, where police arrested 148 mostly Muslim individuals in April. After the arrests, the state bulldozed 16 homes and 29 shops owned by Muslims accused of inciting violence, the report said, citing the BBC.

In 2022, 883 people were recorded to have been executed across 20 countries - mostly in the Middle East and North Africa - reaching the highest number of executions in five years, a report by Amnesty International says.

Compared to 2021, the number of executions increased by over 53 percent in 2022. According to the report released on Tuesday, the spike in executions does not include the thousands of people believed to have been executed in China last year.

Countries in the Middle East and North Africa region violated international law as they ramped up executions in 2022, revealing a callous disregard for human life, Agnes Callamard, the secretary general at Amnesty International said.

The number of individuals deprived of their lives rose dramatically across the region; Saudi Arabia executed a staggering 81 people in a single day. Most recently, in a desperate attempt to end the popular uprising, Iran executed people simply for exercising their right to protest.

The executions were led by countries in the Middle East and North Africa, where recorded figures rose from 520 in 2021 to 825 in 2022.

Voter anger over Erdogans interference in Syria, war fallout, cost him dearly: Analyst "IndyWatch Feed War"

Press TV May 17, 2023

A Lebanese political expert says incumbent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan failed to get the support of people in urban areas in the recent election mainly due to his interference in Syria and the fallout of his intervention in the war.

In an interview with the Press TV website, Nasser Qandil, editor-in-chief of Lebanons al-Binaa newspaper, noted that most of the youths in cities did not vote for Erdogan who has been at the pinnacle of Turkish politics for more than two decades with the slogan 20 years is enough.

The issue of Syrian refugees and Erdogans role in the Syrian war was among the reasons behind the decrease in his votes in cities, he said.

This is while his rival has promised to transfer refugees to their country within two years and deport them if necessary.

Erdogan gained 49.5 percent of the vote in Sundays presidential race compared to 44.9 percent for his challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

As neither candidate reached the 50 percent threshold needed to win outright, a runoff vote will take place on May 28.

Erdogan took home fewer votes in 2023 than he did in the 2018 presidential contest.

Qandil said that in the second round of the election, Erdogan will face challenges such as heavy economic and social costs of Syrian refugees residing in Turkey, the growing unemployment rate, the rent surge, and the rising competition between Turkish and Syrian workers.

With the support of Russia, Iran and Persian Gulf states, Erdogan can draw a two-year framework for the Turkish withdrawal from Syria, the return of refugees, and the dispersal of terrorists from Syrias northeast and northwest, he said.

The second round may give better opportunities to Erdogans rival, unless he bravely plays his trump card and voices readiness to formulate a timetable for the return of Syrian refugees.

For more than a decade, Turkey has backed militants fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and sent its own troops into the Arab countrys northern areas.

In recent months, however, the strategically-located US-led NATO member has taken steps to normalize relations with Syria.

Also in his interview, the Lebanese political analyst compared Erdogan with Kilicdaroglu, saying the incumbent president represents a political religion close to the West, while the latter acts for the Western-oriented and anti-religious secular movement.

Regarding international developments, he argued that Erdogan tends to pay attention to political and economic partnerships, but his rival wants Turkey to play a regional role without being drawn into war and expansionism.

Backgrounder: Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) "IndyWatch Feed War"

Established in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has evolved into a significant regional organization in Eurasia, attracting increasing attention from both member states and observers worldwide. This backgrounder seeks to offer an in-depth understanding of the SCOs history, its strategic motives, and the trends that have emerged over time, while also examining its role and relevance in contemporary geopolitics.

Brief History of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization

The SCO was founded by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in June 2001. The organization initially emerged from the Shanghai Five, which was formed in 1996 with the aim of demilitarizing the common borders of its members following the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Over time, the organization has grown, incorporating India, Pakistan, and Iran as full members, in addition to multiple observer and dialogue partners like Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia, among others.

A key driving force of the SCOs growth has been in response to the enlargement of Western institutions like NATO and the EU. The increasing great power competition between the West and countries like China and Russia has driven these nations to establish and enlarge regional platforms like the SCO without requiring a common doctrine that impedes sovereignty.

On May 10th a report by David Gritten that was originally headlined Gaza militants fire rockets after new Israeli air strikes appeared on the websites Middle East page. The headline was later amended to read Israel and Gaza militants in heaviest fighting for "https://camera-uk.org/topic/raffi-berg/" rel="noopener" target= "_blank">Raffi Berg and David Gritten....

Weekend long read "IndyWatch Feed War"

1) At the Spectator, Stephen Daisley explains What the BBC gets wrong about Israel.

If you get your news on the Middle East from the BBC, every so often Israel appears to go mad and begins lustily bombing Palestinian civilians. No rhyme or reason. Jerusalem is simply pummelling Gaza for the hell of it.

This impression is often created by the BBCs approach to reporting on Israel and terrorism. The story invariably begins when Israel responds to attacks, with those original attacks deemed insufficiently newsworthy until then or reported as a retaliation to some provocation. Then, once Israel engages, the inciting incidents are quietly smuggled into the coverage but framed as just another round in the cycle of violence. Thus self-defence is cast as aggression, and aggression as tit-for-tat.

2) The FDDs Jonathan Schanzer looks at Irans Multifront Strategy Against Israel.

Rockets from Gaza flew toward Tel Aviv on May 10, only a few weeks after Israel celebrated its 75th anniversary. Against all odds, the country has survived despite multiple wars with its neighbors, a dearth of natural resources, and countless other challenges. But the rockets are a reminder that there are no permanent victories in the Middle East. Only permanent battles. There is a real possibility that Israel will be facing a serious war with enemies coming at it from various sides for the first time in nearly half a centuryone coordinated out of the Islamic Re...

Meta Uncovers Cyber Espionage Operations Across South Asia "IndyWatch Feed War"

  • Meta identified three advanced persistent threat (APT) groups using elaborate fictitious personas on Facebook and Instagram to target individuals in South Asia with social engineering tactics.
  • The APT groups masqueraded as recruiters, journalists, military personnel, and romantic connections and relied heavily on social engineering rather than malware to trick victims.
  • Meta disrupted 110 accounts linked to Bahamut, 120 accounts associated with a Pakistan-based APT group, and 50 accounts tied to an India-based threat actor dubbed Patchwork.
  • Meta also took down six adversarial networks from the U.S., Venezuela, Iran, China, Georgia, Burkina Faso, and Togo that engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior on various social media platforms. Read More

BBC News avoids relevant Palestinian Islamic Jihad background "IndyWatch Feed War"

On May 9th the BBC News website published a report by David Gritten concerning IDF strikes in the Gaza Strip earlier the same day.

The original version of that report was headlined Israeli strikes kill Islamic Jihad commanders in Gaza and readers were informed that: [emphasis added]

At least 12 Palestinians, including three commanders of the militant group Islamic Jihad, have been killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

At no point in that report were BBC audiences told that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad is a terrorist organisation which is designated by the EU, the US, the UK, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. Readers were also not provided with any information concerning the financial and military sponsorship provided to the PIJ by Iran.

Despite the fact that the PIJ does not provide any social services to the people of the Gaza Strip, Gritten nevertheless promoted the notion of separate wings to that terrorist organisation:

Islamic Jihads military wing, the al-Quds Brigades, confirmed that three commanders were among those killed.

It identified the...

Last month, Irans judiciary chief reiterated that removing ones hijab is equivalent to showing enmity to the Islamic Republic, and then instituted a new law to fine women 2.5 billion rials ($60,000) for flouting hijab rules.
